Lollapalooza 2016

Lollapalooza 2016

It’s summertime in Chicago and you know what that means, Lollapalooza is coming to town and SocialTechPop is taking an in-depth look at the 2016 line-up. First thing to know is that this year is the 25th anniversary of the beloved music festival and the people behind one of the most beloved festivals in history wanted the lineup to reflect this exciting milestone in Lollapalooza history.

The history of Lollapalooza starts with Perry Ferrell, the frontman for Jane’s Addiction. He thought up Lollapalooza as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction in 1991. Despite the fact that the tour was supposed to be a one-time occurrence, it proved to be so successful that the tour continued every year until 1998 when Ferrell left the planning committee to focus on other projects. Despite the fact that the festival went on without Perry, it was never the same and after 1999 the festival was canceled due to lack of ticket sales. Time rolled on and as the year 2005 approached Lollapalooza tried to stage a comeback, this time as a three day festival in Grant Park rather than as a touring festival. Luckily for us, the festival stuck and we have been enjoying a bigger and better lineup every year since then.

This year the biggest name on the lineup is Radiohead. It is a huge deal that Radiohead will be at Lolla for a couple of reasons. First, they have not toured anywhere, much less in the United States, since 2012. Second, Radiohead just dropped a highly anticipated album that was shrouded in mystery until it dropped on Sunday, May 8th. ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ is the latest album from Radiohead and is being met with enthusiasm and adoration from all Radiohead Fans. Lollapalooza will the second time this album has been performed in the United States, second only to Madison Square Garden. This is an exciting opportunity to see one of the greatest bands of the past 100 years perform live.

One of the other big names on the lineup this year includes J.Cole, a rapper from North Carolina whose latest album ‘Forest Hills Drive’ is described as “a concept record about how a boy discovered his purpose, written from the perspective of a superstar rapper questioning the facts of fame”. Needless to say his set will be an emotional and explosive performance that no one will want to miss.

With additional names like Ellie Goulding, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Disclosure, Lana Del Ray, G-Eazy, a performance from the founder himself, Perry Ferrell with his band Jane’s Addiction, and many many more, this show is an event you won’t want to miss.

Grab your tickets and we’ll see you and your friends in Grant Park on July 28-31!
